are some lp options absolute?

lp -o 300GrayscaleK document.pdf

I want with this option only the black cartridge
printing.

Question:

      -With the hpijs driver and CUPS.
      -The two (black and tricolor)cartridges
          installed.

Is there ANY possibility of the tricolor cartridge to
print,even in presence of this explicit option:
300GrayscaleK?
(end of ink in the black cartridge,etc.)

NOTE: lpoptions -l  gave 300GrayscaleK as one of the
      options available.
