[cups.general] cups and hl5170dn

I have a problem with the brother hl5170dn printer.  When I print from 
Windows directly to the printer over the network, it works just fine. 
But when I print from cups on ubuntu using ipp, the printer locks up. 
Everything goes dead. the buttons and network interface all cease to 
operate.

I did use the brother ppd as suggested by the cups documentation.

brother technical support is no help.

any ideas?
