[cups.general] HP 4200

we are trying to print to an hp4200 from Mac OS X.
we have cups 1.1.23 running on a linux server.
The Mac queue runs raw to the linux queue which we have tried
with a variety of drivers.
While we have a number of other hp printers running without a
problem,  the 4200 prints the test page fine but produces a
PCL XL error if we try to print anything else.
Does anyone have an HP 4200 running with cups and if so, with
what driver?
