[cups.general] can't figure out proper URI

Try this:

Kill cupsd on the client machine
Edit /etc/cups/client.conf to contain the lines

ServerName Name.of.host.with.printer
DefaultPrinter name_of_printer_on_server


Then do

lp some_file_to_print


and see if it gets printed on the server.
