I will leave it as you suggest. Retested with no joy so far.

Tried both, works the same either way (I do have the workgroup defined
globally in the smb.conf).

I have (re)tested with printcap name = cups instead. /etc/printcap
contained only:
  # This file was automatically generated by cupsd(8) from the
  # /etc/cups/printers.conf file. All changes to this file
  # will be lost.
  dc|Created by redhat-config-printer0.6.x:rm=localhost.localdomain:rp=dc:

These unknown options appear by default in the system-config-printer gui
(formerly known as redhat-config-printer) which is how I added the
printer. I can remove them from the filter options section of the queue
options tab. The resulting error log has no more "unknown option"
complaints, but otherwise the result is the same.

The .ppd is identical to what is distributed with the hpijs
driver for the 4110. I thought that looked weird too, but it's identical
to /usr/share/ppd/HP-OfficeJet_4110-hpijs.ppd.gz. It does pass testppd.
Also, at this site http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/productsmf.php the 4110
is equated with the DJ3320's print modes.

Thanks for having a look. If you have any more ideas pls advise.

Also, I was able to boot FC3 on the Win98 box, and print with the same
driver, but CUPS-to-CUPS between the two FC3 boxen. That worked fine.
Unfortunately, Win98 has to stay for now, so I'm stuck with CUPS-to-smb.
