[cups.general] Win2K printing (yes I RTFMed :)

Hi all. I've RTFMed on this topic and tried various suggestions but still
have a problem.

The cups version 1.1.14. This is quite old (Debian) but I don't _think_
that is part of the problem.

The brinter is a Brother MFC210C connected to a Debian box via a USB
cable. The server and numerous Linux clients (Debian & Suse) can print
perfectly. There is a single Win2K laptop I need to deal with.

I first tried to connect the printer through Samba. I want to print
directly via CUPS if possible but I'm putting this in for reference.

This exact installation has successfully had Win98 clients print
previously to a _different printer_ through Samba (using cups printing).

Now the printer and the OS have changed (no chance to change them one at a
time). Two file shares off the same box are working perfectly as always.

Under Samba printing from W2K to the MFC210C was failing with a "Access
Denied" error that was all over Google. Setting use "client driver = yes"
in smb.conf prevented the error but resulted in the print jobs never
hitting the queue. The Samba logs indicated comunicatoon but no errors.

The drivers in W2K and Linux are the ones supplied by Brother for the
correct OSes.

I verified a remote Linux client could print using smbclient.

I also verified that permissions are not a problem. All boxes tested so
far are on the same lan and I only restrict access to Samba via NIC. In
additionl the file shares are seen fine.

Getting to CUPS:

I setup the printer as:

http://cups.local.domain.com:631/printers/MFC210C

This is the correct queue name and cups.local.domain.com is in the local
dns (which is actually a split dns).

When I attempt to print a test page from W2K to CUPS I see this in the
logs:

192.168.120.52 - - [20/Feb/2005:23:57:24 -0500] "POST /printers/MFC210C
HTTP/1.1" 200 137

In contrast, when a Linux box prints (successfully) I see this:

192.168.120.11 - - [19/Feb/2005:03:30:06 -0500] "POST / HTTP/1.1" 200 123

192.168.120.11 - - [19/Feb/2005:03:31:22 -0500] "POST / HTTP/1.1" 200 135

So it is as if W2K is not calling the right URL but I have set it up in
accordance with all docs I can find. In addition attempts to vary the URL
fail. eg:

http://cups.local.domain.com:631/ fails since there is no printer there.

Any insights gratefully accepted :)

Rob
