Since we use samba 3.0.x (x in [5,9]), we don't have any serious
problems with that
(our win boxes run NT4, W2K, XP, most of them with the most recent
service packs).
The only thing we encountered is that samba seems to have some memory
leaks that
cause the smbd processes to get incredilby big over time. Therefore we
restart
the samba service once a day.

As for authentication, we use login scripts on the win boxes to silently
log the box
in to a dummy share on the samba server and thus need not care about
printing authentication
any more.
