Well, things like this were the main reason we turned the old, old hpnpf
utility by Sun
(was free in the early ninetees) to a CUPS backend that waits for the
jobs to complete
(by appropriate PJL statements, thus this backend requires the printer
to support 
PJL).

There are printers that support (anonymous) ftp (e.g. the more recent HP
printers), and AFAIK,
the ftp session is held open until the job has completed (or aborted).

Both may be a workaround to your timeout issues.
