Help trying to configure a barcode printer

Ok, I'm using a linux distro (Mandrake 9.2) that uses CUPS for printing.  My problem is that I'm trying to configure our barcode printers.  Additionally, there doesn't seem to be an entry for serial port printers.  The panasonic line printer which are our main printers configure to the parallel port without a problem.  However I'm having an issue getting this blank-blank-blank Datamax barcode printer working.  Is there a way to do this and is there a clear and concise guide to making your own print driver given that CUPS doesn't seem to have barcode printers on their list of printers.
