The time CUPS waits for a backend to return a device list is 30 seconds and this is hardcoded in scheduler/devices.c. On my system (PII-233 with an additional ISA IO card) it takes the parallel backend 40 seconds to respond. The backend timeout should be specifialble from command line or a configuration file or at least as a compile-time variable.
