Printer not Queue Status

Hi all,

we're migrating from a lpd printing system to cups with heavy use of the lpd or jetdirect backend.
What we're really missing is a way to ask the current status of an associated printer.
Is there a integrated way to ask the printer status (not queue)?
E.g. in a lpd system 'lpstat' queries the queue and returns tha actual status of the underlying printer.
