CUPS Printer Manager+LPD+400 printers = Slow

I have seen Berkeley lpd implementations having 2000+ print queues, but I am unable to understand why cups is slow.

We found that unsetting the value of MaxJobs from 0 (unlimited) to default fixes the longs delays that I had earlier reported. Is there explanation as to why such behaviour is seen.
