CUPS + Gimp-print on Gentoo AMD64

I can't print! This is what I have: I run Gentoo Linux on a new AMD 64 bit machine, I have installed whichever version of CUPS, ESP Ghostscript and Gimp-print that comes with that system. I have configured an Epson Stylus C62 printer on a USB port.

This is what happens: I submit eg. a test print from CUPS's web interface, the job seems to be accepted without error, but disappears immediately. When I look in the appropriate log file (/var/log/cups/error_log) I see something about 'Hint: Have you installed ESP Ghostscript' or something - which I have.

Question: is there a way to get this SW to actually tell me what it is trying to do, like eg. 'Can't find /usr/bin/gs' or '/usr/bin/gs returned an error: ...' - or indeed any useful message? The output from the various debug levels doesn't tell me enough, or rather not something useful.
