Would this work across OSes if it were based on
mDNS/Zeroconf/Rendevous/Bonjour (I'm not sure exactly what to call it, but
all of these names seem to refer to the same autodiscovery protocol).

It seems like Zeroconf is pretty handy for a lot of different services, not
just autodiscovery of printers on one's LAN.
