IPP clients (MAC OS X) always default to A4 media.

As for the media size, you should make sure that the configuragion file for the pdftops filter
which Debian uses contains

	psPaperSize match
	psCrop yes

That assures that the media size is derived from the crop box (if defined) or else from the media box
defined in the PDF file(s). 

But note that a PDF legally may contain pages of different sizes which will be, AFAIK, passed through
to the PostScript in this case.
