HP LaserJet 1010 prints only one page

i've got here a gentoo installed with cups and a HP LaserJet 1010. my problem is that for some unknown reason printing multiple pages is in vein. hence is i do 'lpr file -# 5' it does not print 5 pages like on other cups systems but only one. the problem exists in any gui application too. setting more than one copy of a page results in only one page printed. somebody has an idea what the problem is and how i can solve it?
