I've got same problem on Debian:

null:/home/evansl/references/cups# uname -a
Linux null.localdomain.fake 2.4.18-bf2.4 #1 Son Apr 14 09:53:28 CEST \
     2002 i686 GNU/Linux

I've only got what debian gave me. I've got synaptic. How do I
know whether I've got usb-printer support?

BTW, output of `dmesg` shows:

hub.c: USB new device connect on bus2/2, assigned device number 2
usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x3f0/0x2811) is not claimed by any
     active driver.

after physically detaching the printer from the usb port, `dmesg|tail`
contains:

usb.c: USB disconnect on device 2

so which device should I specify in the http://localhost:631/admin
window containing:

   Device for hp_psc_2110xi
	Device: ????

IOW, the choices for ???? included things like:

   parallel port #1 (epson)
   USB printer #1
   USB printer #2

Which one of these corresponds to the device mentioned in:

hub.c: USB new device connect on bus2/2, assigned device number 2
usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x3f0/0x2811) is not claimed by any
     active driver.

TIA.
