HP DesignJet 2500CP paper size

We recently updated our OS from RH8 to the Scientific Linux build of RHEL3.  In the process we switched from the old lpd to cups.  Everything works fine except for the DesignJet "plotter".  (It's really a color printer with roll paper, but acts like a plotter.)

No matter what we do, we get the lower right corner of the plot on 8.5x11 inches plotter paper.  Unless we convert it in GIMP and explicitly tell the GIMP to generate a 24x36 or whatever image, but that's slow, tedious, and a bit absurd.

This is a level 3 PostScript plotter, and the PostScript is generated by a variety of apps.  We get the same behavior regardless of the plot's origin.

I tied setting the paper size to "Custom" via the CUPS web interface.  It reported an error contacting the server, but the plotter.conf file was updated.  Even after restarting the server, though, nothing changed.  And since the GUI stopped after setting "custom size" I never got a chance to see what else might be settable.  (It needs to let each PostScript file set its own size.)
