How to link CUPS with a compiled SAMBA

Good afternoon

I'm running a Suse linux 9.3 with the distro CUPS packages.
I've compiled and installed SAMBA (with CUPS support) and now my CUPS won't recognize the "smb" Device. Even when trying to add the printer I receive an "invalid URI" message.
Someone told me to install samba-client from the distro, but that would throw all my compile in the trash.
Does anyone know how may I solve that?
