Canon Pixma IP 1000

I am attempting to install my Canon Pixma IP 1000 printer on my PC running Ubuntu Linux. I have download drivers from http://software.canon-europe.com/Printers/Bubble_Jet_Printers/PIXMA_iP100010104.asp?ComponentID=240003&SourcePageID=311611 I have also found installation instructions at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=45609

Following installation, the http://127.0.0.1:631/printers/ page states:
Description: CANON PIXMAiP1500
Location: Local
Make and Model: Canon PIXMA iP1500 Ver.2.50
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI: usb://Canon/iP1000

When I attempt to print a test page the status goes to processing for a little while, and then returns to idle. However the printer does nothing.
