[cups.development] Re: [RFE] STR #1590: snmp.conf should support broadcast address syntax too (e.g. "Address 10.162.4.255"), with CIDR

[STR Closed w/Resolution]

OK, I just tried both 255.255.255.255 and 192.168.2.255 on my home network
- both worked as expected.

As for converting a broadcast address to a range of node addresses,
technically it would be possible, *however* it would be hard to know when
to do this and it would also not be friendly to flood the network with
2^n-2 packets (the number of node addresses for a given subnet) and we'd
need to extend the Address syntax to provide the subnet or CIDR mask
numbers...

So, the short answer is that we are just going to support simple
broadcast.

We just want to support network-friendly printer discovery via SNMP
without invoking the wrath of the local network administrator/watchdog. If
a company wants to support SNMP discovery across their network, they just
need to configure their routers to forward SNMP broadcast queries to each
network (and if not, the subnet barrier will provide some basic resource
privacy...)
