Launchd is Apple's open source xinetd + init replacement.

As for documentation, INSTALL.txt is the only compile/install
documentation now (no on-line help - no purpose, really, since you need to
compile and install to get access to it...), but right now launchd is
automatically detected (the option is actually there to disable launchd
support) and so right now we aren't going to document it further than the
configure --help output...
