I don't have any locally attach-able device here so I could reproduce your
demo from Atlanta. So I'm not sure any more how the device page looked
like when "local auto-discovery" succeeded.

But in expanding the above thoughts, I think the device drop downs could
even be divided into 4 different ones to make it more easy for non-expert
users. The single drop down list can now become really long on occasions.

 * "Currently attached to your computer": [...drop down list....]

 * "Auto-discovered on your Network":     [...drop down list....]

Possible text to be shown to the user:

     Select here how your printer is connected. Printers can be...
       ...locally attached to your computer (USB, parallel or otherwise),
or
       ...hooked into the network with their own network card, or 
       ...even shared with you when attached to another computer

     "Internet Printing Protocol"
          type: network (should work for all recent models)

     "AppSocket/HP JetDirect": 
          type: network (work for most models)

     "Parallel Port":
          type: local 

     etc.
