Anne, I assume you did (as root) adduser cupsys shadow. Since cupsd runs
as a non-root
user it can read the /etc/shadow file unless it's a member of the shadow
group. YOu will
need to restart cups once you have done this. This is mentioned in
/usr/share/doc/cupsys/
