pdf color vs. b/w printing problems

Dear cups admins,

I have some problems printing pdf documents black and white on color
printers. E.g. a HP color laserjet 5550. I installed the ppd from
linuxprinting.org. It contains a section

*OpenUI *ColorModel/Print Color as Gray: PickOne

which should control whether the document is printed in color or b/w.
I print a pdf document using acrobat reader 7.0.8 switching to black and
white printing in the printers properties. The resulting spool file
contains a section

%%BeginFeature: *ColorModel CMYK
<</ProcessColorModel /DeviceCMYK>> setpagedevice
%%EndFeature

I expected /DeviceGray as stated in the ppd file.

Appendix:
Switching "Print color as gray" in the _extended_ printer properties
works as expected. This is not very intuitive for the users ...
Anything I can do to enable the color vs. b/w switches in the "normal"
printer properties (tab "paper/quality")?

Christoph
