[cups.general] trouble printing many PDFs

This sounds very familiar to a problem I'm having where jobs coming from
OSX Tiger boxes (using Preview or Safari) caused a printer error and
were dropped by the printer.  See

My problem shows up thus far only on a older HP 4000 printer using the
PS driver.  If I send the same job to the HP 5100 in the same office, it
seems to print fine.  I've not yet seen anything like this problem on
our much higher volume HP 4250.
