CUPS test pages print, nothing else prints

Update:

I was wrong in assuming that I could not print in any application. Actually, I can print from OpenOffice and from MS-Word (running in CX-Office/Wine). However, Acrobat and Mozilla cannot produce printer output to the Epson printer (printing to the HPLJ works just fine). I suspect all of this is related to the lp command used as the default printing option in these two applications. If I do a command line print:

lp -d SCX <filename>.ps

I get the error message listed below. It seems as if there is a problem with the selection of filters, although the correct filter has been identified:

D [28/Feb/2006:09:47:52 -0600] StartJob: envp[5]="PPD=/etc/cups/ppd/SCX.ppd"

The command:

gs -dQUIET -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -dNOMEDIAATTRS -sDEVICE=cups cdmanet.ps

produces a similar error message.
