[cups.general] print jobs with different user name

how how does cups get the user name to send with a print job?  the
printers at school are using pharos for printing.  they have some pop up
client for windows and mac.  nothing for linux.  i have determinded that
if i make user on linux that matches the school account login, and print
from that, it works fine.  i dont need the pop up and somehow the print
server gets the correct name for the print job.  this mostly works for
known or common file types.  pdfs and txt files are safe.  i tried to
print from abiword and that print job was sent, showed recieved ( i
think, as this was a while ago) but the print server never knew about it.

questions:

1) is it possible to have cups use a different name or alias for a printer
and user ?

2) does anyone know anything about the pharos printing ?
