I had a similar problem and I found that the ppd file for the printer
was never being changed by CUPS. This was because in the PPD, the
option for tray selection was malformed. I can't remember the details
right now, but I had to crack open the .ppd file in a text editor, find
the option in question and make sure everything seemed to make sense.
Basically I looked at some option that worked and some option that
wasn't sticking and figured out what was malformed in the second. I
think it had something to do with underscores (_) and the Default*
option. I haven't run into the problem in quite a while, so I'm not
much help, sorry.
