lpd queues frequently jamming

First, I'm new to cups. I searched through the FAQ and Forum, with various keywords, but haven't seen my problem.

We just loaded a new file/print server using SuSE Enterprise 10, with cups-1.1.23-40.6 and share the printers via samba-3.0.22-13.18. The problem is this. The queue on a printer will jam. When the queue is jammed, I'll use lpc status printername and get this:

printer is on device 'lpd' speed -1
        queuing is enabled
        printing is disabled
        XX entries
        daemon present

I'll then run /usr/bin/enable printername to enable printing, at which point the jobs usually start printing again.

So far this problem has only occured on two printers. A Xerox Phaser 8200 and an HP 5SI Mopier. All our printers are setup as LPD queues and we don't do local filtering.

Here's our print config from smb.conf
[global]
printing = cups
printcap name = cups
printcap cache time = 750
cups options = raw
use client driver = Yes

[printers]
        path = /var/tmp
        read only = No
        guest ok = Yes
        printable = Yes
        browseable = Yes

anyone have any ideas as to whats going on? let me know if you need more information.
