Geting printer status

We are planning to replace CUPS as print server in our application instead of our own printer codes. The problem is we need to display the printer out of paper and printer off message to the user. I searched all the CUPS document I could not find any API or lpstat will return this information. If I use the lpstat its shows the printer is accepting request and idle even the printer is disconnected. Any information will be appreciated.
