Character Spacing

When I print from Mac OS X to any print queues on a Debian based CUPS print server, the character spacing is just awful. What is causing this and how do I fix it?

Printing to the same printers via USB does not recreate the poor spacing.

Network config:
The Mac OS X client has a local raw queue that sends to a hpijs queue on the Debian CUPS print server.

USB config:
v3.1 Photosmart 7660 print driver from hp.com

Any ideas about how to fix the character spacing problem for the network configuration?
