Hello,

problems with the parallel port are (usually) no CUPS problems
but low-level (kernel related) problems.

There are some bug reports about problems with the parallel port
in our Novell/Suse Bugzilla. A good report to start is
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=185135
See also the other bug reports which are mentioned there.

Something is fishy with the parallel port stuff in the kernels
since Suse Linux 10.0, see
http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2005-Nov/1206.html

The current workaround is to experiment with various BIOS settings
and explicite additional settings in /etc/modprobe.conf to find a
setup, which actually works in a particular problematic case.

By the way:
The HP Deskjet 710c is a so called "GDI" printer which does not
print plain ASCII text so that a test like
echo -en "\rHello\r\f" >/dev/lp0
would not produce any output on your printer even if it is correctly
sent to it (the printer simply ignores all but its proprietary HP PPA
printer language), see also
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Purchasing_a_Printer_and_Compatibility
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:GDI_Printers
http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/unsupported.html

But you can use the above "echo" test at least to find out
whether there is an error message when you do it and/or whether
there are kernel error messages in "dmesg" while you do it.

Kind Regards
