We're using Pykota as the accounting system for CUPS printing. One
really nice thing about Pykota is that it provides all sorts of places
you, as a sysadmin, can hook in and affect the accounting with custom
scripts. The other thing I really like is that it can do 3 different
types of accounting (software, pjl, and snmp) -- these can all be
specified per printer which helps a lot with coping with poor hardware.
This makes it possible to do quite complex things if need be. The
biggest frustration I had was a lack of good web interface (which I then
custom developed) for our helpdesk and myself to see what is happening
with the system overall. The remaining frustration I can attribute to
CUPS 1.1.23 and crappy, cheap, and/or old printers.
