This is no surprise at all. Some fonts work with Ghostscript 7 way
better than Ghostscript 8, and I still use Ghostscript 7 from time
to time because Ghostscript 8 sometimes just doesn't work.

Ghostscript 8 does seem to be (needlessly, IMHO) much stricter
about fonts than Ghostscript 7, and when Ghostscript 8 first came
out some Chinese fonts just stopped working.  (There were only
a handful free ones back then, so it was really bad and I put off
upgrading for as long as I could.)

I suppose the PS level 3 printers are similarly stricter than old
printers...
