Printing PDF skipping characters

Hello,

I am using Cups 1.2.3 (with the pdftops filter from xpdf 3.0.1) to print PDF documents.  On a few of the documents which have come through, certain characters are missing.  It still leaves a space where the character should be, but some of the characters are missing.  For example, instead of saying "Research" it says "R      rch".  Most of the text where some characters are skipped is in bold, but this is not always the case as some regular text is skipped as well.

If I open the pdf up in xpdf 3.0.1 and print the document from there, all of the text is displayed.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
