Printing PDF skipping characters

If I use acroread -toPostScript to convert the PDF to PostScript, the .ps file prints through CUPS as it should print without omitting any characters.  Also, the characters were properly displayed with the pdf2ps tool (although some of the pages displayed in landscape instead of portrait).  Can I make cups use a different pdf to ps conversion method?
