Hello-

I have spent the better part of two days trying to resolve a CUPS
problem in Debian Etch without success. Hopefully, someone here can
direct me to a fix.

I have a plain-vanilla Etch netinstall server with the "print-server"
package set installed, which includes CUPS 1.2.7.

Here is the problem: I have CUPS installed and my HP 1300 LaserJet USB
printer seems to be configured correctly. (I had to set up my CUPS SSL
certificates manually in order to be able to access the admin pages
remotely.) I can print without issue from the web admin screen. I can
also print from the command line with "lp" from the server itself. I
can see the shared printers in the GNOME print utility on my other
Debian boxes, although I cannot set up a client printer manually by
entering in the ipp info (see next paragraph). I can connect and send a
print to the CUPS server from one of these Debian clients. Everything
up to this point seems to be working perfectly fine just like the other
CUPS servers I've set up over the years in Debian, FreeBSD, and Slackware.

However, in this case, the print jobs I send from clients just stop and
do not print. I get similar errors when trying to set up a client
printer using ipp://serverip:631/printers/hp132

Here is what I see in my /var/log/cups/error_log file:

These "cupsdAuthorize: No authentication data provided" errors just keep
repeating over and over. What does that error mean?

In all my Google searches, I found similar reports in the Ubuntu forums,
Gentoo forums, Fedora forums, and elsewhere. There is an old Debian bug
(#381280) about this issue and I emailed a follow up to the bug saying
the problem still exists. There are bug reports in the Ubuntu launchpad
with similar issues. Nobody seems to have a specific fix.

If anyone has a clue on what this problem is and how to fix it, I would
be most grateful.

Many thanks-
