[cups.general] HP LaserJet 4100 print garbled

I purchased today a used HP LaserJet 4100 with a network card installed
for use in Linux but cannot connect to the web based configuration
interface.

The HP LJ 4100 User Guide I downloaded tells all the wonderful things
you can do using the internal web server but gives no idea how to find
or set it.

I have a JetDirect card installed that says "i/o card ready" and
contains a (long) host name and domain name plus internet IP address,
Default gateway and DNS server but I can't connect to any of them.
The IP address given is 144.45.155.161 but just gives me a url not found
error.

I assigned a fixed DHCP IP address on my internal net based on the MAC
address of the printer but still can't connect or ping the IP addr.
Shouldn't I be able to connect to the internal
web pages on my internal non-routable subnet which starts with '10'?

Someone told me to "press the green button and power up the printer
until cold reset appears in the menu" but I don't want to change the old
settings and there is nothing at all about this procedure in the User Guide.

Can someone give me some hints how to proceed?
I'm very familiar with networking but not with LaserJets.

  Larry
