[cups.bugs] [MOD] STR #2484: make throws errors with CUPS 1.3

Slackware 12, kernel 2.6.21.5-smp, gcc 4.1.2
I set CXX=gcc.  configure runs fine. When I then use make it ends always
with the following errors -

libxpdf.a(JArithmeticDecoder.o): In function
`JArithmeticDecoderStats::copy()':
/home/tom/ftp-stuff/cups-1.3.0/pdftops/JArithmeticDecoder.cxx:36:
undefined reference to `operator new(unsigned int)'
/home/tom/ftp-stuff/cups-1.3.0/pdftops/JArithmeticDecoder.cxx:36:
undefined reference to `operator delete(void*)'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
gmake[1]: *** [pdftops] Error 1
gmake: *** [all] Error 1
