Process the printjob completely, then print--can it be done?

Ok, the printer is configured as follows:

It is connected to the system parallel port, and the port is set to polling mode. The ppd file in use is ok4200pcl.ppd; the ppd checks out as valid with cupstestppd.

When printing, CPU usage skyrockets. Even the mousepointer slows down. The CPU hog is Ghostscript. This slowdown occurs whether the document is plain text or graphics.
