lp0 out of paper so eats job

I have just installed CUPS 1.2.7 from Debian (etch). I've used earlier
versions, and this version, on other platforms, so I'm fairly familiar
with CUPS itself.

This particular server prints to an Epson inkjet via its parallel port
/dev/lp0. If the printer runs out of paper I get "lp0 out of paper" from
the kernel as I'd expect. CUPS notices, and prints this message to its
error_log file:

E [12/Jan/2007:14:36:00 +0000] [Job 10] Unable to send print file
to printer: No space left on device

However, when I put more paper into the printer and hit its continue
button, I get a few lines more printed (presumably that which is in a
buffer somewhere) and then the print is aborted. Worse, it leaves the
printer in an intermediate state that usually requires a powercycle
to reset.

The CUPS web interface shows the job completed successfully.

An indeterminate earlier version of CUPS did not exhibit this behaviour;
instead, it correctly waited for the printer to recover and it then
continued the job. Just as I'd have expected.

Any suggestions, please

Cheers,
Chris
