Upgrading es 4 to cups 1.2

Must admit printing and drivers for windows 'just works'.  Going to cups 1.2 to stop disabling printers on error has been a 'wonderfull' experience.
Working out just how things now work and from were etc. gave me a head ache.
Have a HP laserjet 1320n and a hp laserjet 2100M. 2100M worked but when I
went to modify anything it just did not work again.  Downloaded ppd's for
both, reconfigured both 2100M worked, 1320n on submission of test page the
printer error light blinks, press the go button (pain for user) it prints.
Modify the 1320 to use the 2100 ppd it automatically prints.
Does anyone know why or what options have to modified in the ppd.
And why when going into the modify option it does not have the previous
configured driver, you have to always reselect the ppd?
