All changes merged to trunk in r6170.

The new side-channel API is implemented in the serial, parallel, USB, and
socket backends - the rest of the backends do not provide bidirectional or
immediate printing and so (currently) do not support the API (the "pap"
backend might get an update, but only if there is demand...)
