German "umlauts" missing after cups pstops conversion

/usr/share/cups/data/testprint.ps is intact; it is viewable through gv, and it prints perfectly fine through Brother's driver, but it gets mangled this way if I try submitting it through CUPS (e.g. cupsdoprint).

But I don't understand where and why it gets mangled -- can you give me some hint where I could look? Could there be something wrong with the PPD that would cause this? Maybe the same cause also makes my umlauts disappear...
