Unfortunately, this would require a lot of work to "get right", and the
driver would need to cache the entire page so that it could rotate and
potentially scale the image to fit on a specific media size.

FWIW, we (at ESP) use the USPS and FedEx web APIs to get PNG files that
can be printed directly on our LP2844 - works great, and doesn't require a
lot of special code.
