Thanks for the suggestion. I had already seen the 2450 in
openprinting.org, however, the 7450 has additional features that the
2450 does not have. The critical one for me is that the 7450 has an
optional banner tray that will print heavy stock 12 inches by 47
inches. From past experience, if it is both optional and unusual, it is
very possible that it is not supported in Linux. The PPD file may
reference the feature, but CUPS may not recognize the syntax in the PPD
file.

To Russbucket, I can't print a test page because I haven't bought the
printer yet. I wish there was a local dealer with a demo model, because
then I could just take my Ubuntu laptop to the store with a crossover
cable and test it out. I can understand why a dealer would not have a
demo model, because it is not hugely popular and it would tie up floor
space and working capital for very few sales. I have been trying to
find a Linux user who has one, but so far have been unsuccessful. If
anyone has any suggestions for how to locate a Linux user who has a
Magicolor 7450, I'm all ears. Just one user who says "yes the feature
works" shortcuts pages of theorizing.
