You can put *any* printable file declared as a 'legal' MIME type for
CUPS (as per mime.types) into /usr/share/cups/banners/. (Specifically,
these are PDF, PostScript, HP/GL, Text, TIFF and most other image file
formats...)

After restarting CUPS, the new file(s) should appear in the CUPS web
interface (or in kprinter's GUI, or even in gtklp and xpp GUIs...) as
one that may be selected.

When used, it will go through the filtering chain that is defined by
mime.convs and the '*cupsFilter:' line(s) in the PPD.
