trunk/r6710: 'Linking testadmin... gcc: @LDARCHFLAGS@: No such file'

Current trunk doesn't compile for me. (It's been a while since I last
did an 'svn up'. Now I'm at r6710).

Platform is openSUSE-10.2, compiler is

   'gcc (GCC) 4.1.2 20061115 (prerelease) (SUSE Linux)' #

according to the "gcc --version" query. I did make clean and did re-run
configure. However, 'make clean' did run into an endless loop, looking
like this:
