kprinter does not recognize printer instances

Hi,
our CUPS release (1.2.5) seems to store the lpoptions file in ~/.cups/lpoptions as opposed to the earlier ~/.lpoptions. Unfortunately kprinter (KDE 3.5.5) now doesn't recognize userlevel printer settings and printer instances any more unless the user manually links ~/.lpoptions to ~/.cups/lpoptions.
Is there a fix/workaround for it? We are stuck with the KDE and CUPS releases Fedora FC5 delivers with `yum`, therefore manually installing newer KDE releases on all clients it not an option.
Thanks a lot
frank
